We offer HBOT (hyperbaric oxygen therapy) for two different goals — sports recovery and healthy aging — and the questions we hear most often are basically the same for both: is this the same equipment, is one “stronger” than the other, and does the evidence actually back up what’s being claimed. Here’s the honest breakdown.
Same Chamber, Different Goal
The underlying treatment — breathing high-concentration oxygen in a pressurized chamber — is identical either way. What changes is the context and the outcome you’re targeting. HBOT for sports recovery is aimed at genuine soft tissue and muscle injury, where placebo-controlled trials show improved wound healing and reduced complication rates as an add-on to standard recovery care, and it’s part of our Performance program. HBOT for healthy aging targets cellular recovery and inflammation support as part of an ongoing wellness approach, and sits within our Longevity program.
Maana has used HBOT clinically for over 5 years, starting at Rajagiri Hospital, before it became available at Maana Wellness clinics — this isn’t equipment installed to catch a trend.
What the Sports Recovery Evidence Shows
For genuine soft tissue and muscle injury, HBOT has real supporting evidence. For everyday post-workout soreness, it doesn’t — the honest positioning, echoed independently by multiple review teams, is that HBOT works best as an add-on to standard recovery care for real injuries, not as a blanket recovery tool for every kind of post-exercise fatigue.

What the Healthy Aging Evidence Shows — and Where Marketing Oversells It
This is the one where we’re most careful with language, because it’s also the one where the wellness industry most often overstates the science. The underlying research is real, peer-reviewed, and shows genuine, statistically significant effects on specific cellular aging markers — telomere length, senescent (“zombie”) cell counts, and skin collagen density, from studies out of Shamir Medical Center.
What those studies don’t establish is that HBOT “reverses aging” as a whole — that’s a much bigger claim than a specific biomarker study can prove. The honest position is to cite exactly what the research shows: specific, measurable biomarker changes in small studies, not a broader anti-aging claim, even though a more dramatic version of that claim is easy to find elsewhere.

How to Know Which One You Need
If you’re recovering from a specific muscle, tendon, or soft-tissue injury, sports recovery HBOT is the relevant program. If you’re not treating an injury and your interest is general cellular recovery and inflammation support as part of an ongoing wellness routine, healthy aging HBOT is the fit. Either way, your consultation includes a health history review to confirm HBOT is appropriate for you before starting — the same clinical step for both programs, available at our Kochi and other Maana Wellness locations.
